{"id":86,"date":"2015-01-06T21:33:32","date_gmt":"2015-01-06T21:33:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/themichaelgarcia.com\/increat\/?p=44"},"modified":"2025-05-14T13:31:56","modified_gmt":"2025-05-14T17:31:56","slug":"truck-drivers-required-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/transcourt.com\/fr\/2015\/01\/truck-drivers-required-2015\/","title":{"rendered":"The hunt for drivers will intensify in 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"\">Figuring out how to\u00a0<\/span>find and retain truck drivers<span class=\"\">\u00a0is only going to intensify for most carriers this year, according to experts, with many planning bigger wage boosts to aid in that effort.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-540 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcourt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/truckdriver.jpg\" alt=\"truckdriver\" width=\"340\" height=\"234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/transcourt.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/truckdriver.jpg 340w, https:\/\/transcourt.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/truckdriver-300x206.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 340px) 100vw, 340px\" \/>In the latest survey issued by\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.transportcap.com\/\">Transport Capital Partners<\/a>\u00a0(TCP), over 90% of carriers polled by the firm are expecting to increase driver wages this year \u2013 with more than a third expecting those wage increases to be in the range of 6% to 10% or double what was reported to TCP six months ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;Carriers are seeing potential applicants go to other sectors, like construction, where there is more predictable home time and where extra pay is not limited by federal\u00a0hours of service\u00a0(HOS) regulations,\u201d noted Steven Dutro, a TCP partner, in the firm\u2019s report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe end result is that revenue from rate increases will go into\u00a0purchasing new equipment,\u00a0driver wages,\u00a0rising maintenance costs, and\u00a0regulatory costs\u00a0\u2013 and not as much into the carrier\u2019s pockets in 2015,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Yet Eric Starks, president of research firm\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/ftrintel.com\/\">FTR Transportation Intelligence<\/a>, that while such pay increase percentages can help alleviate the driver shortage near-term, much higher pay levels may be needed to help foster a longer-term solution to the issue.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWe think we\u2019ll need to see really significant pay increases to start attracting real interest from the broader labor force,\u201d he told Fleet Owner. \u201cIf we start seeing [driver] pay up around $80,000 per year, then you\u2019ll see far more people willing to make the personal time sacrifices to work that job. At $45,000 to $50,000? Not so much.\u201d<\/div>\n<p class=\"\">Starks is also unsure how \u201caggressive\u201d the trucking industry as a whole is prepared to be on the pay issue, which is why he thinks more than a few may opt to focus instead on what he called \u201cmargin growth\u201d scenarios.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIf capacity remains tight, instead of expanding operations, many [fleets] may instead focus on increasing rates and their [profit] margins, then share it with their corps of current drivers,\u201d Starks said. \u201cThey won\u2019t grow their fleet but they also won\u2019t have to go whole hog on big pay raises either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Richard Mikes, a TCP partner, added that carriers as a whole largely remain hesitant to add capacity because of that shortage of experienced drivers, with replacement far outpacing additions on order boards for new tractors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">One option he said carriers are contemplating is pushing for a regulatory change to allow younger drivers under the age of 21 to apply for commercial drivers licenses (CDLs).<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Mikes noted that, according to TCP\u2019s current survey, that \u201cyounger driver\u201d concept enjoys large support in the industry, with 84% of carriers in the firm\u2019s poll in favor of it.
