{"id":3471,"date":"2018-01-04T12:07:11","date_gmt":"2018-01-04T17:07:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/transcourt.com\/?p=3471"},"modified":"2025-06-24T14:36:36","modified_gmt":"2025-06-24T18:36:36","slug":"will-there-be-a-new-generation-of-truck-drivers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/transcourt.com\/fr\/2018\/01\/will-there-be-a-new-generation-of-truck-drivers\/","title":{"rendered":"Will there be a new generation of truck drivers?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to industry experts, a crisis is looming in the transportation industry and at the center of it all is a shortage of drivers.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 2058px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/mediad.publicbroadcasting.net\/p\/michigan\/files\/styles\/x_large\/public\/201608\/10950639346_fd4a2db7ea_k.jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" alt=\"Driver\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">New Generation of Drivers<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201c[American Trucking Associations] were estimating up to 80,000 by 2020\u201d, said Lane Jacobson, president of the Southern Alberta Truck Exposition Association. \u201cNow they\u2019ve corrected that number and they\u2019re saying shortages of over 200,000 drivers in North America by 2020.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian Trucking Alliance says in Canada, the labour shortage could reach 48,000 by 2024. It\u2019s a reality many don\u2019t want to face.<br \/>\n<!--more Read more...--><br \/>\n\u201cThe fuel shortages for vehicles will start running out within two days, I believe, so you have no gasoline, you have no food \u2014 which in our society, people don\u2019t realize the importance of this,\u201d Jacobson said. \u201cSociety as we know it would be drastically affected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Events like the Southern Alberta Truck Expo work to close the gap and hire more drivers, along with workers for support industries like\u00a0mechanics and manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>But the owner of Watt &amp; Stewart, a long-haul trucking company out of Claresholm, says it\u2019s not that simple.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur demographics of drivers are now 50-plus, a lot of them,\u201d John Stewart said. \u201cA lot of them are basically retiring and\u2026 we don\u2019t have the people and the young people coming up to fill those positions.\u201d For some, it\u2019s the lifestyle and long hours on the road that poses a challenge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur biggest challenge is the fact that we\u2019re a long-haul company that is away for two to three weeks at a time,\u201d Stewart said. \u201cFamily time is an issue, communication and being away from home.
