The trucking industry has consistently experienced a decline in attracting new drivers and maintaining current ones. The shortage is expected to worsen this year and in the future.
Retiring personnel is one of the biggest causes of the shortage. The American Trucking Associations indicates a deficit of 48,000 drivers expected, and the shortage is expected to increase to 175,000 by 2024.
The average age for a truck driver to retire is 49%, and most applicants aren’t qualified, therefore unable to meet the shortage.
